The Great Cloud Migration – The What?
I started the great cloud migration blog series with “The Why“. I talked about all the different questions that need to be answered to understand if it makes operational sense to move to the cloud. In this blog, I follow up with the next big consideration for enterprises: “The What” of the great cloud migration.
After they answer the question why, they need to finalize some specific application that they want to migrate to the public cloud as the second step in the cloud migration journey.
Given significant differences between services on-premises and those in public clouds, enterprise IT faces two pain points
1. Mapping their apps or infrastructure to the right cloud services
2. Understanding the costs for each cloud service, and the overall cost for all application components, including scenarios for disaster recovery
The sheer number of cloud provider, region and cloud instance choices and trade-offs is daunting to navigate manually and there are many hidden costs. One of the most often cited examples I have seen happens when cloud egress costs are not accounted for, resulting in huge cost overruns.
For someone new to the public cloud, lack of a simple way to visualize and understand these intricacies and differences between on-premises and public cloud deployments creates ‘fear of the unknown’ that can, in turn, delay or even stall cloud adoption. Owing to this complexity and lack of simple automation, most cloud deployments are done based on manual VM mapping where a VM with similar or more resources are used. This has resulted systematic over-provisioning and literally billions of dollars of overspend.
HyperCloud differentiates by deliver turnkey capabilities to ingest existing multi-tier apps in the data center, intelligently group dependent apps together, and proactively deliver detailed bill of materials and cloud costs for complete cloud cost transparency. It also allows customers to model their DR needs and estimate costs to maintain their desired SLA — all proactively and without any actual deployment, risk-free!
