The simple model of Why, What, and Where is a good starting point for how we think about enterprise pain points and their value chain in the cloud journey.
Above are some of the decision points that many customers face when considering the public cloud. For those in highly regulated industries that are public-cloud averse, the answer is immediate and more obvious: stay wary of the public cloud. But most customers recognize this as a good way to capture their needs.
The first W: Why ?
Does it makes operational and economic sense to move to the public cloud?
We continue to see rapid adoption of public clouds such as Amazon, Microsoft (Azure) and Google and others such as VMware continue to deliver ways to better bridge existing customer investments with public clouds. While most solutions lack the simplicity, intelligence, and automation required to make a ‘hybrid’ model easily accessible to customers, their focus on continuity from current on-premises innovation is an important recognition of customer needs.
In the enterprise cloud journey, the critical first decision in cloud migration is whether it makes operational and economic sense to move to the public cloud. As the famous inspirational speaker and author Simon Sinek says, “Start with Why?”.
Is this a lift-and-shift migration to eliminate Data Center footprint and consolidate? Is it perhaps to reduce the DR infrastructure investment as the first step to start exploring cloud benefits? Does this make more sense at an application granularity? Maybe there are some applications that make much more economic and operational sense in the public cloud vs others.
These are perhaps some of the most important—yet overlooked—considerations when it comes to cloud migration
