Transforming IT to Deliver Agility across Multiple Clouds

As we saw in our previous blog, Gartner indicates that most organizations are leveraging 4.6 clouds on average. From this data, the point is pretty clear that organizations are transforming IT and moving to multi-cloud environments. If a multi-cloud environment is not properly deployed, it can lead to complexity and siloed information and organizations, which is the opposite of what you want to achieve. However, transforming your current IT environment to an agile, multiple cloud environment can be challenging.

To ensure silos are not created, there are four key things that you need to carefully plan out and work to achieve:

  • A single view of all cloud assets
  • Portable application design
  • Automation and orchestration capabilities across clouds
  • Intelligent workload placement

The first thing that enables agility is visibility. It sounds basic, but if you don’t know what resources you have, how they are being used and who is using them, it is impossible to know what is available to you and your team. A centralized cloud management portal shows you where workloads are, how they are performing, and if a change needs to be made.

In terms of application design, you need to ensure that an application is designed to live on any cloud. The application, whether it is comprised of VMs, containers, or both, needs to be able to work within a public or private cloud. Technology and innovation are advancing quickly, and the right decision today may not be the right decision in six months or a year. IT and DevOps needs to partner to ensure applications are future-proofed so they can be moved and migrated as needed to meet changing requirements.

Automation and orchestration are key features to transform to an agile multi-cloud environment. This helps you ensure processes are consistent and repeatable across clouds to deliver security, governance and support compliance regulations. Any manual process will seriously undermine your efforts to deliver an agile and flexible environment and makes it much harder to enforce compliance initiatives. Agility is more important today than ever as it provides a clear competitive advantage as organizations need to respond to changing business and technical requirements. Automation and orchestration within a multi-cloud environment deliver the agility the business requires with the control you need.

Finally, workloads need to be intelligently, whether that be on-premises or in a cloud. The CIO is really asking you for three key things, how you can get the best performance, for the best price, and ensure internal SLAs are supported. You need to evaluate the workload, look at how it is build, and the available platforms to ensure performance and price are optimized. In order to transform IT, you need to ensure intelligent workload placement, with the ability to easily move workloads as attributes of the workload and the underlying infrastructure change. No cost tools such as www.cloudmadeclear.org can help provide you with some high-level guidance as to where

At HyperGrid, we are able to help you transform your existing infrastructure to a more agile environment, even with multiple clouds, by providing a consistent experience. Stop by booth #305 at the Gartner Data Center conference or register here to schedule a meeting.
